Let’s face it. Most of us who are overweight don’t always say or think nice things about ourselves or our bodies.
As a mindset coach, I fully understand the importance of having a positive mindset if we want to achieve any goal.
Mindset is super important when it comes to losing weight and improving your health and well-being. A positive mindset will support you and a negative mindset will block you from achieving what you want.
Today, I want to share 3 mindset tips to help lose weight.
- Change the way you think about WHO YOU ARE
- Make it a priority to say nice stuff to yourself every day
- Be really clear about the body you want
1. Change the way you think about WHO you are
Our self-talk when we’re overweight is often a bit like a stuck record that’s keeping us stuck. We might say “I’m so fat.” or “I can’t stop eating.”
Try using “I used to be…” and “Now I’m…”
Here’s an example:
I used to be the kind of person who couldn’t stop eating, even when I felt full.
Now, I’m the kind of person who stops eating when I start to feel full.
and another…
I used to be the kind of person who hated to exercise
Now, I make it a priority to exercise in some way every day

2. Make it a priority to say nice stuff to yourself every day
If you’re not in the habit of saying nice things to yourself then I encourage you to set key times in your day to deliberately say nice things to yourself.
For example, every time you go to the bathroom, look in the mirror and say a few nice things to yourself.
That might be…
- I look nice today
- I’m doing great today
- My hair looks nice
- My skin looks nice
It can be anything. It doesn’t have to be related to weight loss or even your body, just make sure it’s a nice thing about yourself.
For some ideas, check out the Positive affirmations for weight loss post.
I have a mirror rule. Every single time I see a mirror, I have to say something nice to myself. I don’t even need to actually be looking in the mirror, I just need to see one.
3. Get really clear about the body you want
Okay, so there are things you can change about your body and things you can’t. If you’re tall, you’ll always be tall. If you’re like me 5ft 2, you’ll always be 5ft 2.
Also, your general body structure will not change through weight loss. So you want to focus on your healthy body weight, how you’ll feel when you reach your ideal weight, what sort of clothes you’ll wear, how your skin will look…
I encourage you to write these things down and visualize yourself as this person. Visualize the slim and healthy version of you.
Read Get to know the slim and healthy you. This is a really powerful visualization exercise. The more familiar you become with the slim and healthy you, the more your subconscious mind will support you in that becoming your reality.
