Fancy walking a marathon? This marathon challenge is to walk a marathon indoors, in your own home. Sorry, no medals for this marathon, just the satisfaction of completing a challenge. Ready? Let’s do this.
Please note that I’m not a health or fitness expert. I don’t typically like the idea of exercising. I’m a Mindset Coach and like to find easy (ish) and fun ways to add some exercise into my day.
Here are some key facts
A Marathon is 26 miles long, well actually it’s 26.2 and a bit. It’s all very confusing and my maths is pretty rubbish so I’m going with 26 miles. If you want to do the maths more precisely, go ahead.
According to The Walking Site An average person has a stride length of approximately 2.1 to 2.5 feet. That means that it takes over 2,000 steps to walk one mile. As I’m not very tall I’m going to overestimate this one and say I need to walk 2100 steps per 1 mile.
26 (miles) X 2100 (Steps) = 54600
Now, if you really want to then you can, of course, go full out and do this in one day but I’ve decided to make this challenge a month-long challenge. You can choose your own timeline.
Your Pedometer
Your pedometer will be key to this challenge, unlike with my steps challenge, you will only wear your pedometer when you’re doing your marathon walking. So don’t pop it on in the morning and take it off at bedtime counting every random step you take.
I’m going to assume there are 30 days in the month. 54600 steps divided by 30 days is 1820 steps per day.
The Steps
Look, nobody is going to come and measure your step distance or anything like that and ideally, you will be walking around your home (or garden) to do this challenge but if you don’t have much space just walk on the spot. It’s all good.
Of course, you can clock up your steps in the great outdoors too if you want. I just wanted to show you how to build up your steps from your own home.
Your Daily Step Count Printout
If you want to, you can download a daily step count printout to keep a track of your daily steps and your total steps. You don’t need to but if you’re like me and like to see it all written down to see your progress, here’s the download >> Walk A Marathon In A Month Tracker
You’ll have space to track your daily steps and the total steps so far each day.
Remember that this challenge is designed to be taken over 30 days. If you want to you can absolutely do this challenge in less time, just remember to only put your pedometer on when you’re doing your marathon steps.
Make sure you drink your water
As with any marathon, it’s super important to keep yourself nicely hydrated, so please make sure you do have water to hand during your Indoor Marathon.
Drinking water is always good for your health and well-being. Drink regularly and not just when you’re thirsty
What if I miss a day
It’s fine, there are no strict rules, add more steps the next few days, double up the next day… as long as you reach 54600 steps by the end of the 30 days, you’re a winner.
Have fun
This challenge is meant to be fun. It’s a way to get more active, improve your fitness levels and improve your health.

It is fun. I can easily sit and work at the laptop all day so breaking the day up with a challenge like this really helps me get moving more. Enjoy.
