If you’re running a business, working in a team, or building something that matters to you, chances are you’ve come across negative people.
It might be a colleague who constantly focuses on what’s going wrong.
A client who always seems dissatisfied.
A collaborator who doubts every idea.
Or even friends or family who are quick to criticise and slow to support.
And when you’re trying to stay positive, motivated, and focused on growth, being around that kind of energy can feel exhausting.
You don’t always have the option to walk away.
So the real question becomes: How do you deal with negative people in business without letting it affect you or your work?
Here are some grounded, practical ways to do exactly that.
Accept People for Who They Are (Especially in Business)
In business, it’s easy to think people should behave differently, more optimistic, more professional, more solution-focused.
But the truth is, people show up with their own beliefs, pressures, and experiences. Some have learned to lead with complaints. Others feel safer focusing on problems rather than possibilities.
Acceptance doesn’t mean approval.
It simply means you stop wasting energy wishing they were different.
Make a quiet decision to accept people as they are, while choosing how you respond just as you want to be accepted for your way of thinking and working.
If you want to feel accepted, make sure you accept others as they are.
Focus on What’s Working (Not What You’re Expecting)
When you regularly deal with negative people in business, you can start bracing yourself before you even speak to them.
That anticipation alone can drain your energy.
Instead, try this shift: before a meeting, email, or call, deliberately look for one positive thing, a skill they have, something they do well, or even a neutral strength.
When you’re with them, notice anything constructive they say and mentally give that more attention.
You’re not ignoring reality; you’re choosing where your focus goes.
Remember: Their Perspective Is Not Your Reality
You’ll hear it often in business:
- “It’s impossible right now.”
- “Clients are awful.”
- “The market’s terrible.”
- “Nothing ever works.”
When this happens, quietly remind yourself:
“That’s not my truth.”
Then bring your attention back to your own goals, intentions, and mindset.
You don’t need to argue.
You don’t need to convince them.
Just need to stay anchored in your reality.
Gently Shift the Conversation
It can feel polite to agree when someone is complaining — especially in business settings.
I used to do this myself, without even noticing.
But agreeing often pulls you into a negative loop that doesn’t serve you or your work.
Instead, try gently shifting the focus:
- Ask a solution-based question
- Change the topic to next steps
- Redirect towards what can be done
It’s not being rude.
You’re being intentional.
It’s Your Responsibility to Protect Your Business Energy
One of the most important things I learned early on in my business journey is this:
It’s your job to keep yourself in a positive, focused state, regardless of what’s happening around you.
Your mindset affects:
- Decision-making
- Creativity
- Confidence
- How you show up for clients
- How your business grows
You can’t control other people.
But you can choose how you manage your inner environment.
Fill Your Mind With Positive Business Messages
Be deliberate about what you feed your mind, especially if negativity is part of your working day.
Affirmations are a simple, powerful way to do this.
Here are a few you can use specifically for business situations:
- All is well in my business
- I stay calm and focused in all conversations
- My energy is professional, grounded, and positive
- I attract wonderful clients and collaborations
- Positive conversations flow easily to me
Repeat them before meetings, during your workday, or whenever you need to reset.
EFT Tapping for Staying Positive with Negative People in Business
If you use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques), this is a lovely, quick practice you can do before or after dealing with negative people in your business.
Setup (side of the hand):
“I’m tapping today to stay positive, grounded, and focused in my business.”
Tapping reminder phrase:
“I feel positive. I am positive. I choose supportive energy.”
Say these affirmations at every EFT tapping point (show below)
Tapping points:
Top of the head
Forehead
Eyebrow
Side of the eye
Under the eye
Tip of the nose
Under the nose
Under the mouth
Collarbone
Side of the hand (or hand on heart)
Keep it simple. Even one round can make a difference.
Visualise Your Business Energy Bubble
This is a simple visualisation you can use before meetings, calls, or events.
Picture yourself feeling calm and confident.
Imagine a soft, glowing bubble of positive energy surrounding you.
It doesn’t block people out; it simply keeps you steady.
Whenever negativity shows up, bring that image back and feel yourself staying centred and clear.

I’m a big fan of hypnosis downloads and use them regularly in my own life and business.
One I especially recommend is the Negativity Shield Hypnosis Download. I tend to listen at bedtime and let the words gently settle in.
If you’re regularly exposed to negative conversations, environments, or people in business, this can be a supportive way to reinforce emotional boundaries and inner calm.
