Here’s why Medium helps with my mindset and mental health, especially compared to social media.
Medium is an ad-fee reading membership site. Today I want to tell you why I’m a paid member and how this platform is helping with my mindset and mental health.
This is my referral link for you to check it out for yourself – Join Medium (if you’re in a hurry. I’ll share the link again later in the post).
What I’ll cover in this article:
- What is Medium.com?
- Medium for readers
- Medium for writers
- Why Medium is better for my mindset and mental health compared to social media
What is Medium.com?
It’s a platform for readers and writers. I’m both and I love it.
Anyone can read a few (3 I think) stories per month for free. All articles are called stories on Medium. So you can have a look at a few stories to see if it’s what you like.
Here are a couple of mine:
- Why I Became A Life Coach And Law Of Attraction Practitioner
- I Attract Wonderful People Into My Life – This is day 27 of my 100 days of daily affirmations. It includes tips to help you attract more wonderful people into your life.

Medium for readers
Personally, I love that Medium is an ad-free platform and yes, I am very happy to pay the small monthly fee for this privilege. At the time of writing this post, membership is just $5 a month for unlimited access.
If you sign up using my referral link HERE I will receive almost half of that amount monthly for as long as you’re a member. This helps to support my writing. Thank you to anyone who signs up. It is very, very much appreciated.
You can find all kinds of information and genres to read on Medium. I personally love reading short form – Stories of 150 words or less. These are typically 1-minute reads. But, if I’m looking for something in particular or want a longer read, there are plenty.
You can follow specific topics that you’re interested in and follow specific writers.
You can check out my profile here with a list of all my stories. Most of my stories are in the self-improvement topic. But I’ve also written some stories about my experience on Medium and even some poetry. Don’t judge me on my poetry, I’m a complete novice – Check out this poem I wrote – MAYBE
There are also publications that focus on specific topics – Such as Change Your Mind – Change Your Life specializes in Mindset – Happiness – Spirituality – Health and Healing.
The ShortForm is a mix of all sorts of topics – each story is 150 words or less. Remember that stories on Medium are articles, posts, and actual stories… I like this publication because I’m happy to click on a story even if I wouldn’t generally be drawn to the topic. I know the read is going to take 1 minute or even less. And I often really enjoy the read and learn new things. I like this.

Medium for writers
Medium is a fantastic platform for writers who are committed to publishing genuine content. Many writers are experienced and make a living from writing, but there are also new writers who are just getting started.
The vast majority of writers are doing their best to build a loyal following of readers who enjoy their stories.
This means that the quality of the content on Medium is high, especially stories published in publications. Just like with a physical magazine, the writer submits and has to be approved by the editors.
As a writer, I absolutely love the opportunity that Medium gives me.
I immediately have access to a huge audience. I don’t have that same audience here on this blog.
By submitting to special publications, you get your content in front of a dedicated audience straight away.
People who like your content can subscribe to be emailed when you add new content. This is fantastic for writers. You can subscribe to my stories here.
You can earn as a writer on Medium. Yes, you can. Once you have 100 followers, you will be able to join the Partner Program. This allows you to monetize any of your stories. You can also earn by referring people to Medium. Leave me a comment below for tips to get to 100 followers quickly and genuinely.
The best thing about Medium for writers is that there is an incredible amount of support from other writers and readers.
I can publish a post here on this blog and not get a single comment. That’s okay, I know people are still reading here. When I publish on Medium, especially on a publication, I get claps, I get comments, and people highlight bits from the content. It’s a huge boost. And it’s a community. I love it so much.

Why Medium is helping with my mindset in a really big way
When I spend time on Medium I feel like I’m a part of a genuinely nice community. I love reading and I love writing. Medium gives me all of these things in a very positive way.
- Ad-free reading
- A much morepositive experience compared to socail media
- A genuinely nice and helpful community – If these people are willing to pay the membership, they also love the plaform – They enjoy reading great content and where applicable they enjoy being able to write on the platform.
- You’re supporting writers
- You can follow individual writers, publications and specific topics.
- I’m learning new things, connecting with genuinely interesting people and I feel inspired
Medium v’s Social media – The different impact on my mindset and mental health
Let’s look at what I call normal social media. I’m going to include Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. If I’m honest I mostly dislike all of them more and more each year.
I find they can be very negative places, quite self-obsessing. I’m not sure that’s the right word. What I mean is people showcasing how amazing their life is and often we can see it’s not real.
I don’t want my time online to be looking at how amazing other people are and how amazing their life looks (on Social Media). It’s weird. And it’s actually quite depressing, especially if I’m not feeling great already.
I don’t want to be constantly sold to. It’s stressful.
I don’t want social media to decide for me what I want to see.
I don’t want fakeness. I’m done with it and it’s depressing.
I don’t need to know the ins and out of everyone’s personal life.
Social media makes me feel like I’m on a hamster wheel and getting nowhere.
Honestly, I find 90% of social media soul-destroying and not at all helpful to my mindset and mental health.
I want to read genuinely enjoyable and helpful content. I want to be respected and valued. I want to feel connected to like-minded people who genuinely have interesting things to say.
I get that from Medium and yes, I am more than willing to pay for it for the sake of my mental health.
I do still spend time on other social media, but more and more I am turning away from it and spending my time on Medium. It’s my happy place.
If you do take a look at Medium and join, please get involved. Give plenty of claps, it’s nice. Be genuine. Tell people you’ve enjoyed their content and be supportive. Keep this wonderful platform a lovely place to spend time.
