I’m a huge fan of priority task setting as I believe this is the way to consistently move your business forward, closer and closer to your ideal business but there are a few rules to follow.

  • Get really clear about what success means to you. What does your ideal business look like?
  • Set effective goals that lead you to your ideal business
  • Create a clear plan of action to achieve your goals
  • Set your top three priority tasks

Get clear about the business you want long term

I’m a firm believer that there is absolutely no point in setting any goals in your business until you know what success really means to you.

Now, this may change over time but having a clear vision for your business will make your day-to-day business life much easier. You’ll know exactly what to focus on.

Try this exercise – Where do I want my business to be in 5 years’ time?

A few things to think about…

  • What does your day-to-day business life look like?
  • How do you feel about your business?
  • Who are the people you work with? Do you have employees?
  • How much free time do you have?
  • What are your business finances like?
  • Where is your business based?

There are obviously more things to add, but this should get you started creating your vision for your future business.

Effective goal setting

Effective goals are those that move you toward the future business you want. I encourage you to create your ultimate business goals and, from those goals, break them down into goals that you can achieve this year.

From your yearly goals, you then create your monthly and weekly goals. When you follow this simple formula for effective goal setting, you will always be setting short-term goals that lead you closer and closer to your big, ultimate business goals.

Plan of action

A goal without a plan of action is just a nice idea, in my opinion. Look at your big goals and ask this question: “What action do I need to take in order for me to achieve this in my business?”

If you don’t have a clear action plan which is reviewed regularly, it is very likely that you will waste a great deal of time on tasks that will never get you to the business you want.

Priority task setting

At this stage, you know what your future business looks like, you have effective goals set, and you have a clear action plan to achieve those goals.

The next step is to decide which of those action steps are the most important for you to work on. I encourage you to do this yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily.

I encourage you to have no more than three PRIORITY TASKS that you are working on at any given time. That does not mean that these are the only tasks you’ll do in your business; after all, most of us have numerous tasks to do each day.

Your priority tasks are those that are the most important at that time to help you to achieve your priority goals. It means that you make these tasks a priority over all other tasks.

As a quick example, I’ll share my priority task for this week. I have chosen just 1 and that is to complete and schedule 6 new blog posts.

Now, I know that my attention span for this kind of focused work is limited to maybe 2-3 hours a day, sometimes more and sometimes a lot less. But each business day, I make this a priority. Only once I’ve done some work on this task will I start working on less important tasks each day.

Your priority tasks are those that are the most important at that time to help you to achieve your priority goals.
It means that you make these tasks a priority over all other tasks.

When you prioritise these tasks, you consistently move your business forward and closer to that ultimate business.
