I’m a huge fan of goal setting, but not all goals lead to actually achieving what you want. Over the years, I have found that there are 3 things that are the most important factors in goal setting.
When you apply these 3 factors then I believe you give yourself the best chance of successfully achieving your goals.
- You must genuinely want to achieve your goal
- Your goals must be measurable and you must be able to break them down into manageable chunks
- You must take consistent and focused action
1. Your goals have to be genuinely important to you
Your goals have to be genuinely important to you. Not something you think you should do or something other people want you to do. You need to have a real, deep down and genuine pull to achieve what you want.
If you don’t have that real desire then you’ll always find a reason to put it off or you won’t give it your all.
Sometimes you need to reframe your goal a little. Here’s a very simple example: If you hate cleaning your house and set a goal to clean and tidy your home every day. Urm, no. This goal is not a true desire. You’re not going to jump out of bed excited about this goal.
However, if you absolutely love your house to be clean and tidy and get a real sense of happiness and satisfaction from this, that could shape your goal.
Make this your goal: I will give love and attention to all rooms in my home so that each room is beautifully clean and tidy for me, my family and my friends to enjoy. I will do this every day. This goal feels very different right?
Find your passion is a goal that needs doing.
Take a look at each of your goals and ask… DO I REALLY WANT THIS?
2. Your goal has to be measurable and break it down
If your goal is measurable then you can track your progress ongoing. Let’s use my simple house cleaning goal as an example: I will give love and attention to all rooms in my home so that each room is beautifully clean and tidy for me, my family and my friends to enjoy. I will do this every day.
I can have a checklist and each and every day I can tick off that day to show I have achieved that specific goal for the day.
Now let’s say my goal is to save £6,000 for a special holiday. You have 12 months to save this money. So, the target for each month would be £500. Now some months you might save more than others. Each month you can add the amount saved during that specific month and keep an ongoing total to see your progress. Each month you can MEASURE how much you’ve already saved and how much you still have to save.
By monitoring and measuring my progress each month or even each week, I can see what’s working and what’s not and adjust as I go through the year.
You are able to set yourself smaller weekly and monthly goals to keep you focused and motivated.
I personally tend to think when I set a goal for a year’s time, I have ages to achieve it, I go into the “I’ve got plenty of time left” mode. And that’s when I get less done toward achieving that goal.
Then it gets to a few weeks before the
3. You have to take consistent and focused action to achieve the goal
Bottom line – Goal setting is a complete waste of time if you do not PLAN to actually achieve the things you want.
You must plan in time to consistently work on your goal and have a clear action plan that you review regularly to make sure you are actually making progress.
Time spent on your goals may not be every single day but definitely do make a plan to ensure you consistently work on your goals.
You may plan in time daily to work on your goal or you may only be able to set aside 3 hours once a week to work on your goal. Whatever the case, plan time for working on your goal. This way your time doesn’t get taken over by things that are not so important to you.
Step 1: Create a super clear action plan
Step 2: Take consistent and regular action (plan the time)
What is your action plan for this month? This week? Today?
Power question – What can I do today to move me closer to achieving this goal?
