Goal setting is super important for most of us if we want to achieve certain things in life. But, do you review your goal progress too?
Ultimately you want to achieve your goal but for bigger goals, this may take months or even years, so instead of just setting a goal, make sure that you’re reviewing your progress with your goal each and every month.
By completing a review of your goal progress monthly, not only will you see your progress, but you’ll also quickly be able to spot if something isn’t working and make adjustments to your action plan.
Your goals must be clear and measurable to start
Before we start looking at how to conduct a monthly progress review of your goals, it’s important that you already have CLEAR and MEASURABLE GOALS in place.
Ideally, you’ll have set SMART GOALS but most importantly, in my opinion, your goals must be clear and measurable.
CLEAR – When you think about your goal you want to have a super clear vision of it as if you’ve already achieved it. Vague goals get vague results and clear goals get clear results.
A vague goal might be – I want more success in my blogging business
A clear goal would be – I have a successful blog with over 100,000 monthly visitors
MEASURABLE – You want to be able to measure your progress each and every month.
Here are a couple of examples of how to measure your goal progress…
- Goal – Save £50,000
- Each month you will be able to write down in a chart how much you have saved that month and your total progress
- If you have a specific date to achieve your goal, you would break down how much you need to save each month as a minimum.
- Goal – 1000 sales on my ETSY shop this year
- There are 12 months in the year, so at the start of the year, you may have a target of 84 sales each month.
- Each month you would need to adjust your monthly target – How many sales you need to achieve the goal.
- You could also have an ongoing total sales checklist to tick off
How have you progressed with your goal this month?
Measure your progress each and every month. You want to monitor and record your progress toward your goal each month.
This can be on a notebook, on a spreadsheet, you can create some sort of checklist chart to fill out as you progress. Do whatever works for you.
Let’s say you want to save £12,000 this year and you’re setting your goal on the 1st of January. This means you have a full 12 months to achieve your goal.
If you were to save £1000 each month for 12 months, you would achieve your goal by the end of the year.
But you may be able to save different amounts each month, so you would keep a running total each month. This would look something like this…
Month | Saved this month | Total saved | Total left to save to achieve the goal |
Jan | 850 | 850 | 11150 |
Feb | 1300 | 2150 | 9850 |
Mar | 1100 | 3250 | 8750 |
Is what you’re doing working to achieve your goal?
The most important part of your monthly goals review is to determine if what you are doing is working. Are you progressing in the way you expected?
If you are achieving the result you wanted, expected then you’re doing great, keep going. You can even look at how you can build on these results even more for greater results.
If you’re not getting the results you want or expect, you will need to re-evaluate your action plan.
Is there something that you need to be doing that you’re not doing? Or that you’re not doing consistently.
Do you need to get help (guidance, learn a new skill, hire someone who can help you…)?
Often when we don’t achieve a progress goal and we complete a review, we can spot why we didn’t manage to achieve more. This is a positive thing because it gives you the opportunity to take different actions moving forward.
Questions to ask each month…
- What is working?
- What isn’t working?
- What can I improve on?
- What do I need to stop doing?
- What do I need to do more?
- What do I need to adjust?
Use these questions as a guide to help you progress more each month.
What do you need to do to achieve your goal next month?
Finally, you’ll need to set your goals for the month ahead. What do you need to achieve in the month ahead to achieve your overall goal? This is your plan of action for the month.
