I’m a huge fan of goal setting. When done well, goal setting really does consistently give you the life you want. It’s powerful, but it does need to be done right.
So many people set goals and that’s where it ends, they don’t achieve them and I want to make sure this doesn’t happen to you.
To achieve your goals here are 5 key things you must do after you set your goals.
- Break each goal down into manageable chunks that you can complete in a month or less
- Create a plan of action
- Work on your mindset so that you really believe you can achieve these goals
- Review your progress
- Prioritize your goals
Top Tip: Make sure you write your goals down and have your goals somewhere you’ll see then regularly, ideally daily.
1. Break your goals down
Take your big goal and break it down into small manageable chunks that you can achieve in a month or less.
When you have a big goal it can often feel quite overwhelming, When this happens it’s easy to put off working on your goals.
For example, if you have a goal to write a book. Your monthly goal could be I will write 4 chapters of my book by the end of the month, from that monthly goal, you can break things down even further – Your daily goal could be as simple as writing 500+ words.
You may have a goal to run a marathon. So your monthly goal could be to be able to run 10 miles by the end of the month.
Your weekly goal could be to train 4 days building your running time up over the course of the month.
You may have a goal to buy your own home within the next 2 years. You could work out the deposit you’ll need and any other expenses and then create a monthly savings goal.
My current goal is to create a 6-figure blogging business – I have set myself a goal to write a new blog post over 1000 words on this blog every day for 45 days.
2. Create your plan of action
Your small, manageable goals will now form your action plan. You can also ask this power question – What action do I need to take to achieve this goal?
You can ask the power question at the start of the year, the start of the month, the start of the week and daily.
Take your big goals and work out all the steps you need to take to achieve each goal. Write all of these action steps down.
Example – Let’s use the write a book example again (we’ll say it’s a non-fiction book). Steps you would need to take…
- Create an outline for your book including all the topics you will write about
- Write your introduction
- Write each chapter
- Proofread and edit…
This is a super simplified action plan but you get the idea. Then you will decide each month, week, day what action you need to take.
3. Work on your mindset
This is an essential part of successfully achieving your goals. You need to let go of any beliefs that don’t support you. Beliefs can actually block the success you want.
You want to create a positive mindset that supports you in achieving each of your goals.
Techniques to help include…
- Affirmations – Positive statements that support you in achieving your goals such as… I’m consistently achieving my goals, I can achieve my goals. I have a guide on how to use affirmations effectively here on the blog. And a large collection of affirmation posts.
- EFT – Emotional Freedom Techniques – Sometimes called tapping because you tap on MERIDIAN POINTS. This will help to release any resistance and limiting beliefs to achieving the goals. I’ve written a full EFT – How To Tap Guide here on the blog – It’s super easy to learn and use.
- Develop a can-do attitude. If you ever catch yourself thinking or saying I CAN’T DO THIS! Simply replace that with I CAN!
4. Review your progress
It’s really important to review your progress regularly. Depending on the goal this may be daily, weekly or monthly. I would say definitely review monthly as a minimum.
Your goal should be clearly measurable so that you know the exact point when the goal has been achieved.
My goal is to write more is very vague and writing as little as ten words is more than nothing. That’s probably not your goal.
Writing 1000 words a day is a clear and measurable goal.
I encourage you to schedule in specific times to review your progress.

5. Prioritize your goals
This is where so many people’s goals fail. It’s so important to prioritize your goals. Now depending on the goal, this may be something you work on daily, weekly or monthly but it must be a priority.
So many people set goals, then life takes over and a year down the line, they’re no close to achieving that goal.
If it’s a goal that can be worked on daily, do it daily. Or if it’s a business goal, maybe you’ll work on your goals 5-6 days a week and plan one day off. If it’s a financial goal, maybe that’s something you’ll work on weekly or monthly.
Whatever the goal is I want you to focus your attention on it daily. So, if you’re training for a marathon and today is a rest day, you can still focus your attention on your big goal today.
Work on your goals as early in the day as you can. This will mean that every day you’ve done something that moves you closer to completing your goals.
