I’m a huge fan of goal setting for all areas of life and monthly goal setting is key to achieving your long-term goals consistently. For most people, they’re an essential part of creating the life they want.
Today I’m going to explain how to effectively set monthly goals and I’ve got a special Goal Setting Planner download that I’ll tell you about at the end of this post.
Monthly goal setting should move you consistently toward achieving your bigger goals.
A monthly goal is usually a small chunk of a bigger life or business goal. It should be specific, and measurable and you should be able to fully complete that goal by the end of the month.
Here’s a slightly different way of explaining the power of mini-goals – Your monthly goal can be a one-off goal that you start and complete within the month or it can be a mini-goal that is part of a bigger goal (in this case you would complete the mini goal during the month.

The power of monthly goal-setting
Monthly goal setting is incredibly powerful. Some goals could take years to achieve. In this case, it can be really easy to put off working toward them, or they may seem totally overwhelming.
When people feel like the goal is too big, unachievable, or overwhelming, that’s when they don’t take action.
The result is that the goal never gets achieved.
This is where monthly goals come in and become super powerful. These goals can help you to achieve your big goals in any area of life – CONSISTENTLY.
A monthly goal is…
- Specific – You will clearly state what the goal is and write it down
- Measurable, so that you know exactly when you’ve achieved it
- Achievable in the month – You will fully complete the goal by the end of the month
- Part of your bigger goals
Use your monthly goals as a step up
Occasionally a monthly goal will be a one-off goal that is fully complete in just one month, for example.
You book a trip at the beginning of the month and your goal is to save £200 of spending money by the time you go on the trip at the end of the month.
But most of the time your monthly goals are small chunks of a bigger goal. Most people are familiar with setting yearly goals. Your monthly goals would be a small goal that moves you closer to your yearly goals.
Here’s what happens all too often. People set goals at the start of the year and by the end of the year, they’ve rarely achieved those goals.
This is because the goals are either too big and they don’t know where to start or because the goals simply get put on the back burner or completely forgotten.
I want you to be the exception. I want you to consistently achieve your goals in all areas of life.
Get really clear about your big goals
Think about what you want to achieve in the next 5 years, 3 years, and 1 year. These will form the base for your monthly goals.
Take that goal and break it down into smaller chunks. Your monthly goal is simply a chunk of the big goal that you can fully achieve within the month.
Examples of monthly goals
- 5 Year Goal – I will have a £100,000 deposit to put down on a house
- 1 Year Goal – I will save at least £20,000 this year toward my house deposit
- Monthly Goal – This month I will save £1800 toward my house deposit
- 1 Year Goal – I will have lost a stone in weight by the end of the year
- Monthly Goal – I will lose 2 pounds or more this month
- 1 Year Goal – I will complete my blogging course by the end of the year
- Monthly Goal – I will complete 1 module of my blogging course and apply everything I learn
How will you achieve your monthly goals?
What action do you need to take to achieve your monthly goals? Let’s take the goals from above and create an action plan example.
- Monthly Goal – This month I will save £1800 toward my house deposit
- Action plan – I will create a monthly budget and work out how much money I can save. I will sell some clothes to make up some extra money and I will work extra hours
- Monthly Goal – I will lose 2 pounds or more this month
- Action plan – I will plan my meals in advance so that I eat healthy meals, I will workout every morning as soon as I get up, I will ensure that I eat at least 5 portions of fruit or veg daily, I will drink at least 4 big glasses of water daily.
- Monthly Goal – I will complete 1 module of my blogging course and apply everything I learn
- Action plan – I will work on my course module for at least 30 minutes every day from Monday to Friday. I will schedule this time in my planner each day
