Today, as part of my law of attraction parenting series I want to share 5 ways that you can improve your relationship with your child using the law of attraction.

Law of Attraction Parenting Series

This article is a part of my LAW OF ATTRACTION PARENTING SERIES – There are so many more tips for parents and tips for helping your child use the law of attraction themselves.

FIRST SOME LAW OF ATTRACTION BASICS

The law of attraction gives us what we focus on, wanted or not and responds to our thoughts, feelings, beliefs, the things we say and the things we do and gives us what we are a match for.

I encourage you to read through my How to use the law of attraction guide.

1. TO IMPROVE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILD, FOCUS ON WHAT YOU WANT

This means you need to be focusing your mind on what you want and what you say. I encourage you to try affirmations, and positive statements to affirm what you want. Here are some examples…

  • I have a calm and positive relationship with my child
  • My relationship with my child is respectful and enjoyable
  • I’m a Calm and Supportive parent (mum/dad)

Also, make sure that when you talk with your child you tell them what you want instead of what you don’t want. For example, I want you to tidy your toys up now or When we go into the supermarket, hold the side of the trolley.

2. VISUALIZE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CHILD THE WAY YOU WANT IT

Take plenty of time to visualize your relationship the way you want it.  Let’s imagine that you and your child argue most nights after school about homework.

Every day and especially during the hour or so before your child arrives home, visualize what you want to happen.  This is like daydreaming or running a movie in your mind.  Make it perfect, exactly how you want it to be.

Visualize how you behave and how your child behaves.  Think about body language, facial expressions, tone of voice…

Now, this may not play out in reality exactly as you want, but keep coming back to the images in your mind. If something starts to go in a way you don’t like, ask yourself If I don’t want this, what do I want? Go back to that visualization in your mind, breathe and keep your thoughts and vibes positive.

3. KEEP A POSITIVE JOURNAL

If you want to improve your relationship with your child you MUST put your focus on what’s working and leave the rest behind.  Of course, if your child behaves in a way that is inappropriate, they must be stopped, but do this with as little emotion as you can manage.

Your positive journal is exactly as it states, POSITIVE. Write in it every day, ideally, keep it with you to make notes during the day, or during the time you spend with your child. You write down anything that’s positive about your relationship with your child.

I’ve had parents tell me, often in floods of tears that there feels like there is nothing positive only a stream of arguments and bad behaviour.

What is usually happening is that the parent feels lost in the relationship and all the parent can see is the negatives at that point. I’ve definitely had this experience. There will be positives when you make a mental shift to look for and focus on them.

Let’s say your child has behaved in a way that you really don’t like for an hour and then just for one minute, he/she smiles at you or says one thing nice or sits nicely playing with a toy. You focus on that one minute.

Also in your journal, I’d like you to use it to take some time daily to write down some general things you like about your child.

Keep adding to your list.  If you can (at the moment) only think of 2 things you like, keep rewriting the same 2 things, and you will find more things soon. For example, I love my child’s smile, I love it when my child gives me a hug…

This one exercise alone has completely changed relationships.  It’s incredibly powerful.

4. LOOK IN THE MIRROR

I can’t stress this enough.  Often parents think the problem is the child when actually it isn’t a lot of the time.  Please stick with me on this one. I say this with absolutely no judgment, only love.

Over the years I have needed a reminder of this many, many times. Problems mostly come from the parent.

I really do say this to you with love in my heart because I am the problem so often in my relationship with my own son.

I know that when we’re not getting on I need to take a close look at myself, this was true when he was little and still now he’s a young adult.

How I’m behaving, how I’m feeling, what I’m saying, what energy and emotions I’m putting out (my vibes) all have an impact.

I’m usually throwing massive bolts of negativity at him when things are not going well.  I’m stressed about something, and I’m frustrated, tired, and anxious, wanting to get on with my work instead of listening to him talk about his latest obsession.

There’s a famous quote by Mahatma Gandhi — ‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’

My take on that is… Be the change you want to see in your child. If you want your child to be calm, you need to be calm. Once you’ve looked at yourself, work on becoming a match for the relationship you want.

A great place to start is to take a few slow and deep breaths whilst repeating your positive affirmations. Take your journal out and write down a few things you love about your child and a few more things you love about yourself.

Self-love is so important. Fill up your own self-love cup and you’ll have plenty of overflowing love to share with others. I encourage you to read Learn to love yourself.

5. DITCH ANY NEGATIVE CONVERSATIONS WITH OTHERS

Okay, I’ve been there.  I have a dreadful day with my child and I want to moan about it to someone, anyone! Can you relate to this?

But the thing is it’s not helpful. You are throwing so much focus and energy into the very thing you don’t want.

Remember that law of attraction note I shared with you at the beginning of this post, the law of attraction gives you what you focus on. Focus on what you want.

Ditch any negative talk from now on and only talk about positive things, seriously it’s a must if you want to improve your relationship with your child using the law of attraction.

I will also say that I found this really hard to do and I still do it from time to time. If you do catch yourself complaining about your child, switch it to what you want instead. Keep asking yourself “If I don’t want this what do I want?”

🙂

As my mum says, “If you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything.”
