Acknowledge what’s going on
I really wanted to start with this. I feel that it’s really important to acknowledge that it is a stressful time for you. I feel that many self-help style gurus go with this ‘Always be happy, Always be positive’ approach and actually I don’t feel that is always the most helpful thing to do.
I say this to you as a long-time mindset coach and from my own personal experience.
The 'Always be happy - Always be positive' approach isn't always the best advice. From Coach Wendy
If you’re feeling stressed there is likely to be a reason that you feel this way. Rather than trying to shut out those feelings, just acknowledge what’s going on and how you’re feeling and sit with the feeling.
Imagine when you were a child and you were upset. If an adult said to you come on cheer up, would that really be helpful? You probably had a good reason to feel upset. Maybe you learned how to hide emotions instead of releasing them in a positive way. I encourage you to read It’s Safe to Explore and Acknowledge Your Emotions
Take some time to acknowledge the feeling, and acknowledge what is causing the stress. Then you can move on in a positive way without trying to ignore it as I believe this will cause more problems.
Do your daily EFT
EFT, Emotional Freedom Techniques is such a powerful technique to use at stressful times, in fact, at any time. I would really love everyone to do some daily EFT to help with day to day stresses of life and generally boost your energy flow.
When you’re going through a particularly stressful time in your life, I recommend at least 1 EFT session daily of at least 5 rounds. Ideally, do a few rounds a few times during the day. This will really help.
I recommend that you read my EFT Guide and then these EFT Sessions…

Cut out the unhelpful noise
At stressful times I encourage you to cut out all unhelpful noise and distractions in your life. Whether this is from social media, saying yes to non-essential things, or distancing yourself from people in your life that can lower the way you feel.
You really want to focus on keeping yourself as strong and positive as you can. One of the first things I do in times of stress is to unfollow anyone on social media that is not bringing me joy or being helpful in some way.
I also clear my calendar as much as possible and monitor what I’m watching on television or even reading too. I greatly limit or cut out anything that is adding to my stress levels or just not helping me in some way.
Try replacing this positive noise with positive affirmations that support you in feeling calmer and more positive. I encourage you to read these positive affirmations.
Focus on what really matters to you
This very much ties in with the last point. I encourage you to really put your focus on what really matters the most to you personally.
I encourage you to read How to Balance And Improve All Areas of Your Life and take a look at my Simplicity Goals Setting Download – Both will help you to really get clear about the things that are most important to you.
“No” is your power word at this time. Choose wisely the things you decide to say yes to.
Focus on gratitude
Gratitude is truly powerful. No matter what is going on in your life, you always have the choice to shift your focus to gratitude. It really is a small thought change but the benefits really do have a big impact.
At the time of writing this post, like so many others we are in lockdown. It’s just me, my son and the dog. I’m unable to see friends and family and life is not normal at this time.
I definitely find this stressful at times. I can easily let my thoughts spiral out of control and be in floods of tears. But as much as I can, I put my focus on gratitude.
For example, I’m so grateful that I am able to work from home, I’m so grateful that my son, in particular, can still connect with his friends and actually see them, something that really wouldn’t have been possible when I was his age, I can also do the same with my mum, friends and family, we’ve set up a weekly family quiz night. I’m so grateful this is possible for us.
The problem is still there but with gratitude, you can focus on positive things that are going on.
Bonus tip – Focus on what you can control
I’m updating this post in 2023 and I realized there was an important step that I missed out. So, I’m adding it in now.
Focus on what you can control. In stressful situations, there are often aspects that you have no control over.
Do things that you can do that will make a difference and turn the rest over to the universe (turn it over to whoever or whatever you personally believe in, this may be God, the Angels…)
I know this might sound a bit woo-woo to some of you reading today but focusing on things that you have absolutely no control over is simply going to give energy to the problem. That’s not what you want to do. It’s going to lead to more stress for you and it won’t help the situation at all.
A final thought if you’re dealing with a stressful time
Those are my five tips(now 6 tips) for dealing with stressful times but I do just want to finish off by saying that I want you to focus on taking really good care of yourself.
After the death of my dad, I ended up totally burnt out and emotionally exhausted. A very wise lady explained to me that I had to put myself in top position.
I was trying to be all things to all people and it wasn’t working. Whilst I found it incredibly hard, I knew she was right. I needed to take care of myself and put myself ahead of everyone and everything else, only then could I really be of any use to others.
I would like to share a few posts for further reading that I think you’ll find helpful.

Be kind to yourself at this time, and speak kindly to yourself and others. I know I need to remind myself of this when I feel particularly stressed.
Sending out healing and calming energy. Thank you for reading and I hope you find these words helpful.
Please support my blog and share this post wherever you can. You never know who needs to read this. Thank you so much. Wendy xx
